Amusing News Reports and Hoaxes

"A group of college protesters traveling to Washington to support rallies for the upcoming Copenhagen meeting were stranded in Tuesday's blizzards as they passed through a section of I-80 in Eastern Iowa. Although this section of road had already been closed, the group decided to try to brave the storm. Unfortunately, although the car had ample charge on the battery heading out, they did not have sufficient gasoline to manage the heating needs that hybrid cars use as a reserve. When the car ran out of energy, David Stein, age 22, was left to watch the car for several hours while the rest of his friends went to get help. Although David was well equipped for the cold and most adults would be expected to survive this brief period of cold exposure, David experienced a rare form of cardiac fibrillation brought on by the cold temperature. When Ron Corby, a passing interstate official stopped to check on the vehicle, he found David unresponsive. Fearing possible hypothermia, he immediately made arrangements to get David airlifted to the Emergency Department located in the hospitals of the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Unfortunately, assessment in the emergency department showed that David was suffering from cardiac fibrillation brought on by prolonged cold temperature. Although many adults can survive extended cold temperatures, some individuals are more sensitive to the cold than others.
Deborah Winslow, local leader of NIU's "A Green Earth for Tomorrow" expresses her condolences at this tragedy but reminds people that random changes in the weather do not represent the trends of the larger climate change at large. She hopes that all travelers will use their common sense when traveling this season and not attempt to drive closed roads."
